Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is visiting Sweden on Wednesday to strengthen defence cooperation amid his country’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
The visit takes place in the city of Linköping, home to defence manufacturer Saab, as both nations explore potential collaboration on advanced military technology and exports.
As per a Reuters report, the Swedish government confirmed that Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will visit a company in the city—widely believed to be Saab—and later hold a joint press conference to announce new developments in defence exports.
Focus on Saab’s Gripen and defence collaboration
Linköping is the production base of Saab, maker of the JAS 39 Gripen fighter jet, GlobalEye surveillance aircraft, and several missile and anti-tank systems.
While the Swedish government did not specify which company Zelenskyy and Kristersson will visit, Saab’s prominence in the city makes it the likely venue.
The leaders’ discussions are expected to revolve around Sweden’s potential role in strengthening Ukraine’s air defences and overall military capacity.
Sweden has been a consistent supporter of Kyiv since Russia’s invasion in 2022, providing both military and humanitarian assistance.
A joint press conference will be held following the visit, where both governments are set to present updates on defence exports and cooperation agreements.
The meeting reflects Sweden’s growing commitment to Ukraine’s security needs, especially as the country integrates more closely with Western defence systems.
Gripen jets remain under consideration
Talks over potential Gripen jet deliveries to Ukraine have been ongoing for more than two years. Although discussions were temporarily paused to prioritise the deployment of American-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, Sweden has continued to explore options for future collaboration.
Ukrainian pilots have trained in Sweden to test the Gripen system, signalling preparation for possible transfers in the future.
Earlier this month, Kristersson said he and Zelenskyy had discussed Kyiv’s interest in the Gripen jets during a meeting of European leaders in Copenhagen, according to Reuters.
The Swedish prime minister reiterated that a “strong and capable Ukraine” remains a key focus for Sweden’s foreign policy and defence agenda.
He added that cooperation between the two nations would continue to deepen as Ukraine strengthens its capacity to defend itself.
Testing and training continue in Sweden
While Kyiv is currently focused on integrating the F-16s it began deploying in August, Ukrainian pilots’ experience with Saab’s aircraft has been valuable for potential future cooperation.
Training sessions in Sweden are designed to familiarise Ukrainian pilots with the Gripen’s systems, enabling a smoother transition should an export decision be made later.
On Wednesday, a Saab spokesperson declined to comment on the visit and referred all media queries to the Swedish government, the report further added.
Saab, which has long been a key player in European defence manufacturing, has recently seen increased interest in its technology from NATO members and allied countries due to heightened geopolitical tensions across Europe.
Sweden’s evolving defence role in Europe
The visit underscores Sweden’s transformation into a more active defence partner within Europe. Following its application to join NATO, Stockholm has increased investments in defence manufacturing and sought stronger ties with allied countries.
Linköping, as a hub for Swedish defence production, symbolises this renewed focus.
